The Newcastle Jets were all but written off before a fifa 16 ultimate team coins ball was kicked this season, but they are now a team of which all others will be wary. Having slumped to the bottom of the pile last term, the Jets regrouped in the offseason, making a number of key acquisitions -- not least, new coach Scott Miller.
This has led to the Hunter club notching three wins this campaign -- already the equal to last season's total -- including the scalps of reigning champions Melbourne Victory, the fancied Melbourne City and Wellington Phoenix.
If not for a dubious offside decision against Sydney FC in round two, Newcastle would be undefeated, and nobody could say they don't deserve it.
Last start, the Jets remarkably rallied from two goals down to defeat City 3-2; a result which puts them in third spot heading into Saturday's home clash with the Western Sydney Wanderers. It's certainly a winnable fixture for Miller's men, as is their following encounter with Central Coast Mariners.
Based on the opening month of the season, there is a lot to like about this Newcastle outfit. If they can claim maximum points in the coming weeks, the Jets could shock everyone to be leading as the competition rolls into December. Finally, after five years of lacklustre football, Newcastle once again has a club to be proud of. Cue the return of big, lively crowds at Hunter Stadium, starting this weekend.
"You didn't want him. Thank you!" Sydney FC boss Graham Arnold was seen to shout at his Mariners counterpart Tony Walmsley as Matt Simon headed home the winner against his former employers last Sunday.
Simon's brace in the Sky Blues' 3-1 defeat of their NSW rivals was naturally a huge talking point out of last weekend, with the striker coming back to haunt his old club -- which sent Sydney top of the league in the process.
This week, Sydney skipper Alex Brosque faces his old club Brisbane Roar, with Arnold no doubt hoping he too can find renewed motivation. Elsewhere in the league, Newcastle's Mateo Poljak will take on former club Western Sydney.
But, perhaps the most interesting story of a player reuniting with an old flame this week occurs in Saturday's FFA Cup final, as Victory goalkeeper Danny Vukovic collides with Perth Glory. Melbourne are favourites to lift the trophy at home and, having left Perth following a controversial salary cap breach, Vukovic will be positively brimming with enthusiasm to ensure that happens.
Melbourne Victory aren't the only club on a high heading into this week's action, with the clash between Sydney FC and Brisbane becoming a top-of-the-table match-up. While many predicted the Sky Blues would be thereabouts throughout the season, few would have forecasted John Aloisi guiding the Roar to three wins from four rounds.
The secret to their early success has been the in-form strike partnership of Brandon Borello and Jamie Maclaren, who have scored seven of the team's 10 goals thus far. However, for Sydney to halt the Roar strike force, they will need to cut the supply line, which has been quite spectacular in the form of Spanish import Corona and Socceroos stalwart Matt McKay.
If Brisbane can remain stable at the back, there's no reason they can't get a result away this Friday, which would set them up nicely ahead of their following two home matches.
