What A&R's Rep look for...
Unsure on what A&R reps are looking for. Know you got the talent but cant get the right people to listen. Unsure on how to approach a A&R rep or why they may choose someone with less talent than you.
Even though the music industry have changed over the years, a good A&R rep is still the go to person to help you get that dream 5M deal. A&R reps look for artists who has that signature sound, a great live show, potential hit songs, a marketable image and most important that "wow factor". They also look to see if they can sell the music on a large scale, is the music compatible and marketable to recent trends, can they sell it to their label, age of the artist, is the music good, will the artist drop me, and long-term career potential.
A&R reps tend to like artists that are already selling albums locally and are having those records counted by sound scan. They also prefer business-minded artists that first help themselves and who has a strong work ethic, drive and commitment. A&R reps also like artists who press and sell their own recordings, build a strong fan base, establish a strong web presence, and have a clear vision of their goals
With the change of time, record companies today spend less time developing acts, so you got to already be polished and ready to go. Point blank, they are looking for the path of little resistance to make sure they'll make a profit for their investments. Now you have a little knowledge on what A&R reps are looking for. So if you don't have together, you need to get it together...to get that deal.
- Is the music good?
- Is this music compatible & marketable to recent trends?
- Does this band possess talent?
- Does the band possess "Buzz Factor."
- Does this band have a solid live draw & live presentation?
- Does this band have a good work ethic, drive and commitment?
- Age of band members (Preferably no one over 30?)
- Over 100,000 song (minimum) downloads on MY Space?
- Can I sell this music on a massive scale?
- Can I sell this band to my label
- Will this band "FLOP" me in the end?
A&R reps also look for artists who have a strong work ethic. Will the members of the band continue to work hard at creating their own opportunities once they get signed or will they rely entirely on their label to do everything? Will they have the endurance to tour relentlessly or will they burn out quickly? Do they have wives, kids, substantial bills, and other domestic responsibilities that may inhibit the pursuit of their goals? Simply put, record labels look for the path of least resistance to ensure that they'll make a profit from their investments.
