There are several reasons why organizations and individuals around the world choose to own a shipping container. First you must know that owning your shipping container in this industry is also known as a shipper owned container. This is a container that is owned by an institution or individual and no longer owned by a shipping or procurment line.

The reasons for owning a shipping container include:

Running time; If you purchase your own container you have the ability to load the container at your location and on your time frame. You may have a project that will require the deteriorating of machinery or gathering donated goods over a long period of time and with a shipper owned container you can load as these projects progress. The alternative to using your own container would be using a shipping line container. The shipping line will give a rate that can be daily or each week known as demurrage. This demurrage is essentially rent and can be very cost too high if you cannot load the container within a day or two. Demurrage is given at both point of origin (where you load the container) as well as point of destination (where you sell the container).

Security & space shipping containers; Using a shipper owned container allows you to have the container at your location and store your goods in that secure container without taking up valuable pillow video at your location. If you use a shipping line container, due to the demurrage costs, most organizations have to choose to store their goods in a separate manufacturing facility or on site prior to bringing a shipping line container out to load in a short time of time. Having your own container at your location is a very secure way to store your goods prior to shipping and when they get to their destination. Many charitable organizations give money goods to areas of the world with limited security and having a shipper owned container will let you keep those goods in this secure, steel container as the project develops.

Shipping options; When you own your container it gives you the option of shipping with any shipping line, which can lead to fighting the ideal shipping rate. If you chose to use a shipping line box, you are at the mercy of using that line to ship. This can affect rate, time frame and which ports that line may or may not service.
