As a precursor to the Krebs Cycle, carbohydrate Enhanced keto
or lipid or protein are first broken down into Acetyl CoA, a two carbon molecule. This two carbon molecule begins the Cycle. It combines with a four carbon molecule (called Oxaloacetic acid) to get citric acid. Further reactions occur which produce CO2, NADH, ATP, FADH2 and the Oxaloacetic acid which is needed as an input to the Cycle.When protein is the precursor to the Krebs cycle, an enzyme called BDKADH (branched chain keto acid dehydrogenase) breaks down amino acids into the pyruvate molecules that turn into Acetyl CoA that fuels the cycle.
