What You Need in Your Promo Pack

Need media exposure, more gigs, industry attention, or maybe radio airplay? Is your promo package going straight into the trash? Is it hastily thrown together without much thought or purpose behind them?

More than 95% of promo package sent by artists are tossed in the trash. Your music promo pack is your calling card. It introduces you to labels, press, managers, distributors; really, anyone who can help your in your music career. So remember, if you don't generate enough interest in the first minute, they will never listen to your demo.

Simple really is better, keep it brief and to the point. If you put together a great promo package it will showcase you so you don’t have to tell everything. A great promo package should have: Photos-you should always send a color photo, because many publications demand color photos; it should try to capture what one might expect from listening to the music; make sure you clearly label the pictures with you name and contact information. Bio-your promo package should include a short one page telling what you are about; include numbers if you have them like having 10 000 facebook fans and have sold 3000 tracks already. Demo-pick 3-4 of your best songs; track listing for each song. Contact-make sure your contact information is clearly printed on your demo, your bio, and your press release - if have; always include your name and website address on every piece of your press, you can include a phone number, but you should never ONLY include a phone number.

In a sense, a promo package could almost be considered like a resume, the easier you make it for the recipient to find the necessary information, the greater the results. So don’t: have too much information; have not enough information; have poor grammar or misspelling the recipient’s name on your package or cover letter; poor research/no prior contact -not knowing who to send package to, or send “To whom it concerns,” or “ A&R.”; have bad tone with your promo package, ask for kit back, make excuses or explanations.

Be positive and confident. As you're building your music career, it's important to use every small success as a stepping stone to a larger one. So remember it's extremely important to keep your promo package up to date. Use these tips and you will be that rare gem that caught their attention making you that 5%, who get their promo package seen .
